I left Brenham early on Sunday morning after crashing in a tiny roadside motel. The motel was pretty sketchy, but sometimes I like that style of drive-up-to-the-door, ditch my camera stuff in the room, crash for 6 hours, then leave in haste to catch the sunrise. Sunday morning turned out to be rainy and freezing… pretty horrible for a lot of outside photography. So I ate in downtown, read a few chapters of Ananthem, drank a lot of coffee, chatted with a waitress who was an aspiring photography student and gave her some golden nuggets of truth, then drove on to Houston.

Several miles outside of Brenham, I saw this strange collection of houses and stores that were all brightly colored but recently abandoned. It was still raining, so I put it on my list to hit on the way back later in the evening. Luckily, the weather was dark and moody when I returned. I spent about an hour walking around this old abandoned place, shooting a bunch of cool and creepy things. I have no idea why everything was boarded up and empty… there might have been some squatters in one distant house, but I was kind of freaked out by some strange music coming out through some of the boarded-up windows, so I decided it was time to leave…

I’ll post more shots of this place later… it was very strange… reminded me a little of a mid-80’s Texas version of my visit to Pripyat (the little town right by Chernobyl that was also abandoned).

I sat down on the curb on Main Street to watch the Disney parade come by. Normally, frankly, I don’t like parades. I am very easily bored, and I need to be extremely visually or mentally stimulated or else I just zone out… But the Disney parade was great… they throw everything at you, and then some. Once these ghostly dancers started moving down the street, I felt like I was in some kind of a dream sequence…

The ghostly Spectres that haunt St Pauls are released from their specially constructed Sepulcher only one day a year, for only 1 hour. This time frame limits the distance in which they can travel, so the vast majority are drawn in by the lights of the Millenium Bridge, a short walk away, and so, congregate there. Using specialist Ultraviolet photography equipment, these spectral visitors have been captured for the very first time. Seeing how our spectral visitors spend their precious time back on earth was a joy to behold.

This shot really is all about timing – as the "lightning" flash is really fast, and when there is no "lightning", the scene is pitch black. I’m shocked that my camera was actually able to auto focus in this extremely short time frame, but it pulled it off! …love that camera :^)

This is certainly a toilet worthy of a ghost. 🙂

I found this one while I was looking through some of my old Disneyland photos. Ghost Galaxy is probably my least favorite of the holiday overlays, it really doesn’t do much to make me like Space Mountain more. I like the ride to begin with, and the additions just feel kind of gimmicky, especially compared with what a good job they do on the Haunted Mansion overlay.

This would probably look good on a Halloween card.

To make the image look like this was very simple. I manipulated it in Adobe Lightroom with some built-in development presets. First I applied a polarizer filter to it to darken the sky, and then I applied a preset called "dark sepia vignette" to give it a sort of ominous appearance.

The most amazing thing about Adobe Lightroom is that all changes or manipulations I make to an image are totally non-destructive. The changes are made to a "virtual copy". The original image remains intact. If I like the changes I made, I simply have to export the changed copy, but the original remains intact.

If you are a photographer and you don’t have a copy of Adobe Lightroom, I urge you to get a copy. It is the best image asset management software package I have ever used, and it is very easy to understand.

I love doing stuff like this.

Yesterday we went up north to Talmage near Ukiah, California to visit Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery. After that we visited friends on a nearby ranch, then we went hiking at the Montgomery Woods State Reserve. It was pitch dark on the way back. I met a scary person on a footbridge.

This is a 20 sec exposure, illuminated by my iPhone light from below. My son turned on his iPhone for 2 seconds. I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and desaturated the result. I finally blended two photos to get a ghost, one with and one without the person.
